What to pack
The climate is quite hot and humid and the following are necessary for a comfortable stay. For the extreme weather carry Sunscreen (high SPF), Sunglasses, Hat or Cap for shade from the sun, Light cotton clothing, Lotion (Aloe Vera). You will need to carry Insect Repellent as there might be problems due to these in some secluded places.
Bathing Suits are necessary as there are plenty of options for charming baths. Personal diving or snorkeling equipment can also be carried if you want to go of your own. Credit Card (Visa, American Express, Master Card) and US dollars are necessary to be carried since you’ll need money for everything.
Entry regulations
Visa can be obtained on arrival, which is for 30 days and expandable. A confirmed hotel reservation assures one immigration clearance , for those without a reservation the tourist’s information counter at the airport is useful.
Some items are prohibited in Maldives including narcotics and psychotropic substances, Pornographic material, Live pigs, Religious materials offensive to Islam, Idols (for worship). The list of restricted items include Arms and ammunition, Alcohol and Spirits, Pork and its by-products, Dogs, Dangerous animals.
Some items are allowed to be carried only with certificates such as live plants and animals (With a valid phytosanitary / sanitary certificates) and Medicines ( With Doctor’s medical prescription).
Airport information
The exclusive Island dedicated to the Hulhule airport is well equipped with modern infrastructure and is capable of landing the biggest of aircrafts. The airport is connected to Male’ through the water route, especially by the boats. The facilities in the airport include 88 transit hotel rooms in Hulhule Island Hotel, Business Centers, Internet Centers, Elevators, specially-designed toilets and telephones, Banks, Postal and telecommunications offices, Over 100 tax-free shops in both terminals, Food and beverage outlets serving a wide range of cuisine, 24-hour medical centre, Children’s Play Area, Over 40 Travel agency counters.
Getting around
Air services are the most convenient way to cruise to and from the islands within the country. Seaplanes, local boats and speed boats are available which are provided by the resort authorities or private players. Boats and aircrafts could be chartered for special trips although it is a bit expensive. Safaris are the other ways to cruise along.
Clothing
Light cotton clothing is recommended. Nudity is prohibited.
Banking / currencies
The Currency in Maldives is called Rufiyaa (Rf). The exchange rate to the US Dollar floats around 12 Rufiyaa per Dollar. The major cards accepted are American Express, Master Card, Visa, Diner’s Club, JCB and Euro Card.
Health and safety
In terms of security Maldives ranks in the top of the charts and the government looks after the issue seriously. In case of health, vaccinations are generally not required if the tourist is not from a country affected by Yellow fever. Most common diseases are Sunburn and Dehydration. Water-born diseases are also common.
Communication
DHIRAAGU, the national communications company provides mobile telecommunication facilities.
Tourism related organisations
The MTPB or Maldives Tourism Promotion Board is situated at the Bank of Maldives building at Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Male’. The Maldives Government Tourist Information Office is located at Bethmannstr.58 in Frankfurt. Both of the organisations provide all necessary information for the Maldives’ tourist.
